Default HI/LOW Shifter

I was looking at the transfer case from underneath while I was doing an oil change but can't really see much. The issue is it moves back and forth and dose nothing. I am assuming that it is broken but need to get access. Is the easiest was thought the top, console from inside?

You can get to it from the top, you'll have to cut through some material beneath the shift boot. Does it seem really loose? Have you blasted it from beneath with Pb blaster wd40 etc?

Mine snapped and has left me roverless for about 3 weeks now. I took to my Indy mechanic and he is working on it but I haven't heard yet how much its gonna cost.
If yours did snap hopefully your hi/low lever that comes out of your transfer case isn't so rusted that you can't get the clevis pin out like mine.

If you do have to replace your hi low linkage and your truck is a 99/01 get a cdl shifter from a d1 that's I should've done but instead I just got a non cdl. Cosmiccharlie has some in the classified section and with the help of the forumers it would be an easy install...unless your truck is a rust box underneath like mine.

As far as getting to your linkage you will need to take your center console out remove the backing plate and open up your trans tunnel (13 pop rivets) it took me about an hour to get everything out, its not that bad of a job.

Access is from the top. I just replaced my shifter with a cdl shifter from a 04. You need to remove the center console, drill rivits out on the plate that holds the transfer case and trans shifters. Lucky8 has a YouTube video showing the steps to install a Ashcroft CD shifter. It covers the steps you need.

If you need to replace the cable, it is held in place with a bracket bolted to the top of the transfer case. There isn't much room to get to it. I had to remove an old cable the previous owner left in place when he replaced the cable. I used a 1/4" drive ratchet with a 10mm socket to remove it. There isn't enough room above it to use a 3/8" drive ratchet and socket. When reinstalling the cable, I put the bolt in the hole on the bracket, then put the cable into position. I couldn't get the bolt in the hole with the cable in position.
