High Pitched Squeak When First Turn Heat On
I picked up my "new" 2004 Discovery SE this week. Drove it home 110 miles with no issues. Did not drive it next day - had to return rental car. This morning, when I turned on the heat, it made a high pitched squeal/squeak for about 90 secods, then stopped. Sounds like a belt, but I wouldn't know where or if it has belts!
If someone could give me some direction, where to look, what to look for, what problem could possibly be, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks all,
Marni

1. If you turn on heat, then turn off - does noise stop? If yes, then fan inside dash under glove box is suspect. Removes with a few bolts, drops down. Can be full of leaves, etc. Can also be oiled with thin oil (3N1, etc.).
2. See attached page from RAVE tech manual. If you want more, free download of whole shop manual and owners manual set below.

It does stop if I turn the heat off. It stops after the heat is on for about 2 minutes as well. I'll take a look at the fan this weekend, and if that doesn't do it, I'll check out the info in the RAVE manual. I actually do have a copy downloaded, but feel pretty lost when I look at it, so thanks for pinpointing where to look.
Thanks for the help, I'll give it a shot

Fan will be found in Heating section, air conditioning was optional in some markets. Rave is easy to use. Workshop things are arranged by title. In the circuits manual, the electrical drawing are road maps, with tiny numbers that show the connector number. The electrical manual gives descriptions and the connector list shows a color pix of the connector location is a hysterically clean Disco.
Thanks for the "map" of the RAVE. I'll be trying to use it today, since it's supposed to be a mild 50 out. The sound definitely comes from passenger side foot well/glove box area. In your experience, does fan need replacing? Or can I still hope that cleaning it of debris and oiking it may help?
Wish me luck! I'm always afraid of tinkering with my car. But, since these things always seem to need tinkering, and I love them and don't have a magic money tree, I guess I better get comfortable with it!

Oiling may stop the squealing for a while but if you've that much squealing it's not going to fix it. Personally, I'd just replace it and be done with it for 15 years but it's a personal call. The thing is, if it's squealing its most likely drawing considerably more current than spec which can burn out the final stage resistor and relays. Typically the blower motors are VERY long lived but what happens is crap gets in them, people ignore it, it throws the balance of the blower wheel off and kills bearings. If you hear a tick or a vibration drop the motor and clean out the leaves and it'll last for 30 years. Also if the cheap foam on the bottom of the cowl is missing (under the hood), replace it. A new "filter" is around $14 LR Genuine new.
