Default High pitched whining - please Help

I think I may have a serious problem. I hear a high-pitched whining from my engine whenever I put the Discovery into gear and start moving. It is the loudest when I am applying slight pressure to the gas pedal. Sounds sort of like a whirrling of metal, if that makes any sense.
There is no sound at all when idling.
I'm still under an extended warranty, but the only dealership in town tells me to just keep driving it until they can fit me in on the 28th. Does that sound like a good idea?

You really shouldn't wait till the 28th. Is there another Rover shop close to you? Alot of the smaller shops can do the work and get it authorized by your warranty carrier.

Are you sure it's the motor? Mine makes has alot of tranny whine that comes from the center consol, I just figure it's normal since it's awd.

Thanks,
I'll look around for a closer shop. Any thoughts on whether it is even safe (and I realize you can't offer a definitive answer) to drive a few miles?
Starting to worry that it could have something to do with the drive shaft.

The noise just started about a week or so ago. At first it was so quiet I thought it might be my imagination. But it has gotten louder. So I've stopped driving it at this point.
It is difficult to pinpoint its exact location, since it only makes a noise when the vehicle is in gear and moving.

It won't be a drive shaft, could be internal tranny or torque convertor noise, bad flex plate or something as simple as a bearing in the alternator or water pump even a brake pad dragging on the rotor.
Can you get it to make the noise by sitting in park and running the RPM's up to 2000 or so?
Does it only do this in gear and or when moving?

Definitely only when in gear and moving.
If I sit in park, I can rev the engine all I want and I get no sound.
