So pissed at myself…
My horn button suddenly sprang off in traffic and I thought I could just quickly put it together in the dark. No such luck of course.
And then I broke one of the stupid legs of the button trying to get it back together.
Such a crappy design.

So, who has come up with a better solution?
Looks like buying the damn things is out — I'm not spending $50 on a button (or $150 on the whole set plus harness).
Particularly when that just get's me back to new, but still awful designed button.

I agree it's a poor design. I was able to find a complete used harness on Ebay for $40 which is way better than $140 or more for new. As for alternatives, I got nothing. I thought about cobbling an aftermarket button in that area but it would look like hell and I prefer everything to look factory.

I think the "fix" is that the orings keep the button centered in the rest of the assembly, preventing it from moving too far to one side allowing one of the tabs (and then the entire button) to release. I've never seen that post so, thank you, I'm going to try it this weekend.

 

I found replacement aftermarket buttons on eBay for a few dollars. They just snap into place.

 

Ebay buttons are $47 cad +$11 shipping + $11 "import charge" (in spite of the fact that no duty is needed to be paid on auto parts at that price if they're made in NAFTA or $5 is it's from elsewhere). Or $40 + an unbelievable $47 shipping (presumably shipped 4'x4'x4' box?).
All not worth it.

I'm picturing the old button glued onto some kind of spring mechanism at the moment...

 

There are two sets on ebay bidding for $10. I snagged one of those sets this summer and fixed mine. One of them ends in 36 hours.

I replaced mine with genuine sets at least five or six times before I got tired of them breaking. Sure these are ugly because he puts his 'name' on them, but they don't break.

 

It's a shame too.. could have just made them plain to blend in with the interior.. I'm OCD, those initials staring me in the face would drive me nuts.

 

I had a similar experience, hop in the truck one cold morning and found the horn button hanging out of the wheel cavity.

I grabbed a lighter and heated up the four leg posts just enough to gently persuade them away from each other. Widening their span. It worked like a charm.

I believe the leg posts over-time weaken and spread due to consistent pressure to work the switch closed enabling the horn relay ultimately, blaring the horn...

If you chose to experiment, be cautioned. The plastic is flammable- you only need to hold the lighter flame on there for 3 - 4 seconds.
