Hot smell after running

Another quick question for you seasoned LR owners. I went to buy the Motorad 180 thermostat for the coolant changeover but I see the thermostat is incased in a plastic type unit. I called Atlantic British and I was asking them if I could get the Motorad 180 and he acted like I was talking jiberish. He said maybe the 180 degree just meant "light".

So I'm returning here to find out where to order it. I see the Motorad 180 on Amazon that I can purchase but it's not in the plastic looking bottle with incoming/outgoing ports for the water.

My question is..is that one complete unit or can I take the old plastic bottle looking thing apart and put in the new Motorad 180 thermo?

The Discovery thermostat comes with the housing as a sealed plastic unit. There is no way to replace just the thermostat. There is a factory 180 degree thermostat that some people have installed that is for the TD5. It also has a lighter bypass spring. The Motorad 180 degree thermostat has the standard rate spring for the bypass circuit. Some people are wary of the Motorad because of thermostat failures experienced by some in other applications. I have the Motorad in mine and have had no issues but it is only about 3 months old.

I believe this conversion started out using a freelander t-stat assembly, them someone stumbled across the Amazon.com: Motorad 439-180 Thermostat: Automotive . which is half the dealer price.

The freelander or the one on amazon thermostat assemblys, if you just order a Motorad 438-180 thermostat, that is just what you will get just the thermostat.

I received the Ultra Gauge today and the Discovery is running at 197.6 consistently at highway speeds. It was about 86 degrees here today. After stopping it jumps to around 202-203 then settles back down to 199 at idle. After what I've read, those temps sounds pretty good.

Yessir, for a stock thermostat that is good, it is not wide open at highway speed (204F), so you have some room left before cooling can't keep up anymore.

The customizable alarms are great on this device also. Should keep me out of trouble or at least from overheating beyond a dangerous point. What would be a good temp to set the alarm at? I set in temporarily to 215 degrees.

As long as you don't spoil you depends. When you first start watching with digital info while driving it can be more than interesting.

Take it up a long long hill on the interstate - and you may climb to 220 or so.
If you do not - the happy days indeed.

get your 180 t stat and you should be just fine
