got the filter and the fluid changed today, looked to have about 2 or 3mm of sludge stuck to the magnet. the filter came out looking kinda graphite colored. fluid when draining it looked pretty brownish red. installed a AutoZone filter/gasket and added Valvoline Dex/merc non synthetic stuff. $17 a gallon at Walmart. I was able to get about 6 and a half quarts back in. took it for about 15 miles down the highway and everything feels good. don't know if i noticed any difference with the shifting or the torque converter.

6ft pounds on the 6 bolts holding the pan and 11ft pounds on the drain plug and 22ft pounds on the fill plug. AutoZone part # TF184

Had a good bit of fuzz/sludge on magnet and similar color of filter/fluid with my service. Normal for trans long overdue for servicing. You you should be good to go and these ZF trans have reputation as being near bulletproof unless abused.

Don't see chunks mentioned below.
Note that a large amount of friction material in the pan or on the filter screen may indicate the
need replace the transmission.

Hi OgEric,

My last trans oil change recently was with Fuchs Titan ATF Dexron 3 but you could also use Dexron 2D. Any good quality ATF is OK but having recently changed the ATF and filter the Fuchs ATF seems to be performing admirably (Deutsch technology and on offer) .

My garage, a pal owned, used the LR branded recommended ATF but in all honesty not much different apart from 3X the price for the LR ATF but he has to go with LR as he was forced to by UK law. Change the oil and filter every 30K miles whether it needs it or not. Normally it takes 5 litres but I managed to have an incident which dumped the trans ATF so mine needed 9+ litres. Don't forget to also fit a new sump gasket to the trans, they're cheap to buy.

PS: Valvoline Dexron 3 should be good to go, they make good oils etc.
