How important is the engine reseal service offered by the dealer
The expensive engine reseal service (where they pull the engine and replace all gaskets and seals and replace plugs and wires---about $3500) was offered to me, and strongly suggested. He said I'm not really leaking anything but that it's important to get on it at my current mileage (around 70k). The 60K and 90K factory services (fluids, etc) I understand the importance of those---but is this big-buck reseal job really necessary at this point?

Yeah that sounds like a sham. There are only about 3 seals you will need to replace. Valve cover gaskets(easy job other than removing the top plenum), Head Gaskets(doable by anyone who can turn a wrench and remember where bolts go back). Crankshaft seal, only needs to be replaced if it leaks. Like mine.

Wow!!!
This is absolutely hilarious!!
Tell them that you also want a bridge with that service!!
If it ain't broke dont fix it.
If you have a leak, fix THAT leak, if your do not have a leak, then dont fix it.
Now go ahead and find a new shop, you dont need the stealer except for a few electrical faults.

Thanks for the posts guys. What made his quote seem legitimate is that he is an independent repair center that only deals with Rovers--he broke away from the local dealership to strike out on his own. His other repair jobs are quite reasonable when compared with the dealer, which is quite high. The local dealer charges $4K for the same service that he charges $2500 for: the "Engine Reseal:" replace head gaskets; replace intake gaskets; replace valve cover gaskets; replace crank seal; replace front cover; replace oil pan gaskets; machine heads; replace valve seals; complete engine degrease and clean; oil change; coolant flush and fill; spark plugs & wires.
He is only the 2nd independent garage in my area that openly and proudly works on Rovers: many others shy away. The other place jerked me bigtime and I never go back...sounds like this one depends on this service for his fancy bread and butter.
Guess I'm still on my eternal hunt for a "Rover mechanic that won't rob me blind." Maybe I have an honest face....maybe I should dress like a bum and plead poverty next time.
