As for the holder tool, yeah I know of those solutions. When I rebuilt it, I jammed a block of wood in the crank web. Worked ok. I don't want to have to drain the oil and pull the sump just for this. I need to torque it, not break it loose, so using the starter is a no go.
I found the official tool on eBay, and it's not the worst deal I've ever seen:
Land Rover 300Tdi, 200Tdi / Jaguar Crank Locking tool (LRT 12 080) (VS4985) | eBay

other sites sell it for 200$+

It's the right tool number... but it has 4 bolts, v8 pulley only has 2. I suppose this is a multi-model tool. The td5 requires 340 foot lbs (!!) as opposed to the v8's 200. 4 bolts is probably to accommodate that extra torque
On a TD5 there is a locking pin that inserts into the bellhousing and through the flywheel but I don't know whether it's the same on a V8.

From land rover:

Good morning Jeff.
The OEM LGH000060 balancers are pre balanced from the manufacture.
Hope this helps.

Told ya Jeff

IMHO Jeff, your pulley is good for a 1000 mile trek at reasonable speeds towing provided you check the torque on the bolt first.

Right you are! Thank god I don't have to get the whole balanced just to replace a pulley.

Agreed, I feel pretty good about embarking. Replacement won't get here in time anyway.

Now to go make a rainjacket for my drill so I can extract the busted tranny drain bolt.
