Default How much does a front crank seal cost to replace?

I am selling my '04 Discovery. Doesn't have too many issues and a buyer and I agreed on $4750. When he came to pick it up we discovered a leak on the front crank seal. He wanted to pay $3500 claiming that it would cost $1500 to fix. I looked it up and it seemed much cheaper, but could not get a solid number. Can anyone give me some insight?

It's like a 20min job and the part is 10-15.00. If it's got a scored harmonic balancer you can get a sleeve for it, or position the seal a little further out.

I don't know anything about your truck but unless it has over 200k miles and the interior is trashed, and is otherwise relatively problem free, I think $4750 is too cheap to begin with. I would tell this guy the price is the price, fix the crank seal once you buy the truck.

Is your buyer a pro, by any chance?
Sounds like he's working you.

why dont you get the job done yourself, that way you know the full cost, plus if you are not in a hurry to sell, increase the price as you have now fixed it and it run it until a buyer comes along that willing to pay the right price

If it helps 276.00 CDN all in, if I needed a sleeve it would have added 50.00. Turns out mine was fine but that was the actual quote.

Unless the leak is big (and I suspect it’s not seeing you weren’t aware of it before), a person should not worry about a little oil leak on a LR. I agree, the guy is trying to work you and the price is probably already too low.

Did it myself twice. Any shop should be able to do it in about an hour or two. The seal is about $18 (Corteco which I use). If the shaft has groves, it needs to be sleeved (SKF99192 / $40) or it will leak again.

I am with Ahab on this. At the price you are selling it they can fix it themself. If they know the truck then they know its not a 1500 dollar job.
Out of curiosity I would love to see some pictures of your truck.

I agree with everyone. Done it myself and it's not a hard/long job and definitely not a $1500 job. The tool to hold the crank can be made pretty pretty easily too. I've got a layout posted in another thread.
