How much of a jerk am I if "crush cans" are removed?
As somebody who has had a front end collision in my disco w/ aftermarket bumper, I cant demonstrate to you how frustrating it is to total your car in just some silly traffic accident. The frame will get damaged, and if you're anything like me, you'll definitely regret putting that thing on.
That being said. I don't believe the crush cans have much of an impact on total G's felt in a crash. I wouldn't feel as if I'm putting other peoples lives at stake by taking them off. However a baby is a different story, being that they're much more sensitive to forces. You're still talking a theoretically inelastic vs. elastic collision. With the crash cans there, some energy IS absorbed. How much? Not sure. But if it means getting a little bit extra help absorbing force during a collision AND saving yourself a $15k repair.....I'd take crash cans over a cooler bumper any day.
Save the cool bumper for when the kid grows up and the disco becomes a weekend fun car

Well...it is a fun weekend car. This is behind the 328 wagon and 911 in pecking order. But point well taken.
It would be interesting to know how much an aftermarket bumper would do to save the frame. At the same time, on a $6000 car do I really care? I'm not sure the answer to that.
Thank you for the reply.

CalL around to local metal fabrication shops. You can get a bumper made for $400-800 typically depending on location and features. You could have them build it exactly how you want it, powder coat it, and still retain the crush cans. I retained mine when I built my bumper.
