You may also want to pull the passenger side valve cover and check out the clogged oil separator... It's connected to the hose going to the intake plenum... Either clean it or replace it with the PCV mod referred to in the stickes. Once that is clogged it increases the crank case pressure and will leave all the "byproducts" of combustion inside the engine instead of burning them off, and it will cause oil to leak out every weak seal.

Yes, that was literally the first mod I did to the vehicle, and I'm glad I did. That little plastic "separator" was broken in 3 pieces and totally clogged. The PCV mod is, IMO, absolutely mandatory for a disco owner. I plan on using Shell Rotella 15-40 in summer and Rotella T6 synth 5w-40 in the cold, does anyone have a good pick for a high- detergent oil for the first couple hundred after the de-sludging and bearing changes?

At $12.99 per gallon, I'd just use the Rotella 15w40 for the initial cleaning.

I replaced the pan gasket on our 03 disco. original owners 5k oil and filter (motorcraft Fl1a) and found 1/2' sludge in the bottom. always stayed on top of maintenence.

What condition is the oil strainer in the passenger side valve cover?
Has it ever been checked or replaced?
