The TD5's can have this problem, but it is not common, at least not so far.

Did she allow it to overheat at any point?

It is worth checking the coolant pump, and check it is working, as what may have happened is that it stopped pumping the coolant around the system and overheated, thus then blowing the gasket. If it is not checked, then it will not last long before it does it again.

I thought that was a Disco I thing.
Only V8's here in the U.S. .
Some of us would love to have a diesel.
So many miles to drive so litte time so much gas. Yes for a diesel.

Silly me, the V8 does have a problem with HGF if it has not been serviced with fresh oil on a regular basis. But it still may have been caused by an alternative problem, like the water pump.

yes my mom did allow it to overheat for a minute before I put more antifreeze and water in it. When we took it to the shop the guy told us it was the radiator so he put in new hoses and radiator but then the problem occured again about a month later with the antifreeze smell and the coolant leaking on the axle found out it a leaking gasket. So overheating a engine can blow a gasket.[X(]

Thanks everyone for your input.

For a minute, no, but longer yes... basically the heat build up means the metal of the engine expands, short exposure, might mean nothing to gasket failure, long expose, the head will warp, followed by cylinder liners moving, once these move your engine will self destruct and be a bag of bolts....
