If the tensioner begins to fail it goes weaker not stronger hence a loose belt.

Thanks Mike, I would definately say the tensioner is good then, cause the belt is good & tight. The overflow cap was replaced just before I got this DII back in feb last year (45,000 miles ago), but its inexpensive enough, I'll pick that up along with a thermostat.

As for the coolant cap, I have had 2 caps fail over the last 3 years, so you can never tell.

well I don't mind putting the $ into my DII at this time. for as little as I paid for the truck, and how reliable it has been, the only maintenance I had to do up to this point was front drive shaft, wheel bearing, water pump & fan clutch, pulley, fuel cap, serpentine belt, plugs and wires, assorted light bulbs, oil changes, air filters, wiper blades, tires ... most of those things are part of routine maintenance that would be needed on any vehicle that age or milage... So I don't mind putting on the new radiator, thermostat, coolant cap, switching to green antifreeze, and replacing the fan... treat my truck right and it will do the same for me. OH and I do ALL my maintenance myself

You can buy those pulleys locally.
Take your old one in and match it up, they might even list it in their computer.

Well I assume that my vehicle would have been one of the ones recalled for this, as the old pulley was definately a hard plastic, and it not only fractured, it completely gone with the exception of the bolt that once held it.... The new one picked up from Land Rover was all metal, so I have a feeling of no fracturing this time.

Recall Reason SUSPENSION:AUTOMATIC STABILITY CONTROL (ASC)
Recall Date OCT 16, 2000
Model Affected DISCOVERY II
Potential Units Affected 36911

Recall Summary
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. THE LOADING CONDITIONS ON THE VEHICLE'S LEFT SIDE ENGINE IDLER PULLEY CAN EXCEED THE MAXIMUM CALCULATED FIGURE OF THE ORIGINAL DESIGN SPECIFICATION. THE MATERIAL OF THE PULLEY CAN FRACTURE AND ULTIMATELY FAIL. FAILURE OF THE PULLEY MATERIAL CAN CAUSE THE PULLEY TO THROW OFF THE SERPENTINE BELT.

Consequence
THIS COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF ENGINE AUXILIARY FUNCTIONS (POWER STEERING, WATER PUMP, ALTERNATOR, AIR CONDITIONING AND ACE).

Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED IDLER PULLEY.
