Hi Im Jerri, 61 yo female raised by a dad who built cars from the ground up and made sure I knew a little something about cars so I wouldnt get taken advantage of. Sorry in advance for long posting but wanted you to see what Ive done and been going thru in entirety.
So I bought my 2002 Land Rover Discovery 2 about a year ago. It ran ok but they didn't have the key so they added a switch. Only with switch cant lock doors and anyone can steal it. Have finally gotten a set of new fobs but will have to have it programmed and keyed to the door lock. (Soon)
After looking closer at the engine I noticed that it had a hose that was a garden hose and that was the start of my adventure in bringing my Discovery 2 back to what it should be.
Had to change all the lights and a couple light housings. ✔️
got a replacement side mirror. ✔️
Bought a new touchscreen stereo ✔️ (stolen)
Cleaned it up and changed oil ✔️
Bought a bunch of parts that were cracked or broken and put those on ✔️
glued parts back together ie dash board, side mirror housing ✔️
Bought new hoses for window washer✔️
Bought and replaced any cracked or obvious hoses needing repaired. ✔️
Bought and installed new battery✔️
Bought new tires✔️
contacted previous owner for key and fob but no luck (grrr)✔️
So after all this and probably some I'm forgetting, Im driving to a job and I hear a sound that sounds like an exhaust leak from the lower drivers side and it's getting louder and louder. I pulled over to see if I could see where it's at and if I could do anything about it. Couldn't find it but can feel air but don't know where it's coming from. I didn't go to the job and drove it home, parked it and called my nephew to come look. He did and said it was a gasket from the manifold to the exhaust pipe. I ordered the part and changed it. Still same noise. Ordered another set just in case and changed both of them. Same noise. My boy friend ran and obd2 test and he said spark plugs. So he said he would do it. 3 days later I went and picked up my car and took it to the repair shop. I asked them if they knew what the sound was and they also said spark plugs. Told them change the spark plugs and wires they said ok. They called me and said the valve cover was missing screws so I should change the gasket. It wasn't leaking oil before and figured my boyfriend must have taken the screws out and lost one on each side so I told them I'll get the screws and to just change the spark plugs and wires. They said ok. I got a call from my boyfriend who went to check on the car saying that they have half the engine apart. Mad, I called them and they said they needed to change the valve cover gaskets but if I don't want them changed then I still owed them $500 for the work they did or they would keep my car for non payment. Furious I told them fine change the gaskets that don't need changed and that I had the gaskets in the car already. (I bought a whole gasket kit just in case earlier). I also reminded them that I wanted the spark plugs and wires changed. They said ok and called me 2 days later saying it was done. My boyfriend went to get it and it still had the same noise. Furious again I asked them did they change the spark plugs and wires they said they didn't and would cost more to do it. My cost so far was supposed to be a deal at $1000 (this was including the spark plugs and wires and 2 valve cover gaskets) They said it would be done in 1 hour so my boyfriend waited. They took 2 hours and (I discovered later they didnt change at least 3 of the plugs) didn't have the wires so they gave me a discount to $750. Guess what? Same sound! Yes I'm going to sue them! Got my car home and it sat waiting for someone to help me change the dang spark plugs and wires. Finally got that done and changed the coil too. Started it up fully expecting it to sound wonderful and nope. Discovered that they didn't use the right spark plugs so bought all champion plugs making sure it's the right ones and boyfriend brought home a compression tester so we both worked together trying to test that. My boyfriend was really trying to do everything right and while he was looking at the car one day he decided to look underneath and saw a bolt that looked loose so he decided to tighten it and it broke in his hands. (Dammit! Don't touch if not broken!) Turns out it's a bolt that is on a stainless steel shaft that the gear shift is connected to and the bolt slides along that shaft and makes the gear shift, shift gears. I don't know what that bolt is called and was hoping someone could tell me. I've searched for specs so I could order the part but cant find anything. I've scoured your site in hopes I'd find it but no luck. The gear shift moves inside the car but won't change gears underneath. Please tell me someone knows what I'm talking about and will help me?
BTW I got so mad that we haven't finished compression check or spark plug replacement.
Coil and wires changed✔️
Still need a new plastic parts of front bumper, both side front windshield plastic pieces are gone, need to reattach the headliner in spots, gotta get the keys programmed and keyed.
Bought adhesive spray for headliner✔️ The broken bolt I tried to fix but failed. Heres where the bolt was on the shaft that connects to the gear shift

Reason: Uploaded photos of bolt and shaft.
spark plugs generally don't mean increasing noise. If gasket didn't fix the exhaust leak then the downpipe most likely cracked right at the weld seam underneath the connection from manifold to pipe. Very common failure point. Exhaust shop should be able to get it welded back up at a reasonable cost.
@DaOnlyHihiNalu I am with @whowa004 most likely a cracked down pipe. I don't where you are but get a better mechanic, this should have been about 15 minutes to find by anyone competent. It is weird for DIY'ers, because it sounds like a gasket leak and can be very hard to see.

One thing you need to do is, find a local Land Rover group, and join it. Then, ask them who they recommend for service. You need to find someone that specializes in older Land Rovers. Many of the dealerships won't work on them anymore.

Thank you I will check and see if that's what it is and let you know. I appriciate your time and knowledge.

Lol I went to Land Rover for the missing screws and they said they were obsolete and didn't stock them. Screws? Really? I ended up ordering them on EBay or Amazon I forget now. Thanks for your input!
you should download RAVE if you have not, there are links here. This image may help you.
There it is! See where the gear shift is then connected to the cable, at the end of the cable is a stainless steel shaft and on it is where that bolt is that broke off. I took a picture of it and going to upload it now. THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is the stainless steel shaft it was on and connected to the arm thing next to it. This is the broken bolt I tried to fix but failed.

I agree and took it to a mechanic at a shop and they ripped me off. My Dad would be very disappointed in me for getting taken that way but he would also be happy that Im going to sue them and hopefully get them to stop doing that to people.
