I'm down to the block!
So I'm down to the block. I'm going to pick up my heads in the morning from the machine shop. Thankfully a fellow member donated a good set of heads so I didn't have to wait to get mine off! So for today I'm just cleaning and prepping parts for re-assembly. but I have a few questions about re-assembly.
1: I read some of you guys talk about using the old valley pan as a template for setting the heads? I think I understand, but can someone elaborate on this?
2: where exactly should I put the rtv when installing the valley pan gasket. under the end seals, and under the clips that hold the gasket down, but where else? again a detailed elaboration please.
3: any particular brand of rtv or sealants that you have found to be most reliable. I have always found YAMABOND to be top of the line for water pumps and things, but I'm out. I'll be purchasing an oreily/autozone prduct

1) when you install the heads, the locating pins allow for some movement, enough to misalign the intake with the bolt holes in the heads. Place the heads on the block, install the bolts less than finger tight, place the caller gasket on, place the intake on and put the bolts in. If they don't thread in, try wiggling the intake. Snug them down, this should locate the heads. Then touque the heads. Remove the intake and valley gasket. Then reinstall then with end seals etc.
2) here is a good procedure. http://www.cannibalv8.com/cv8-instal...sket-end-seals. Check the rave for the torque sequence.
3)I used hylomar universal blue. Its what LR uses. [url]http://www.hylomarsealant.com/_resources/_html/products.html[/url
Permatex makes a similar product. http://www.permatex.com/products-2/product-categories/gasketing/gasket-sealants/permatex-permashield-fuel-resistant-gasket-dressing-flange-sealant-detail
If you look in the corner of the package it says compares to hylomar.

thanks ACAMATO! that was the kind of tutorial I was looking for. I have the rave and I downloaded paul p38 top end build, so I have pretty good resources in front of me. but I wasn't 100% on the valley pan. I had heard a lot of variations. I like your link!
What you described on the valley pan was what I assumed but I just wanted to be sure I understood it... thanks bro!
