Seriously, I opened both of mine the day I test drove my truck back in '07, they have not been touched since.
I had to laugh at this because my son and I did/ and are doing the same thing. Tested the roofs on the test drive back in July when we bought the truck and the sunroofs have not been touched since. We just keep thinking they work as is and there is no need for using.

2003 Discovery 127K with high miles service complete.

I think you should do what you want with your Rover and your time. I have sunroofs in my 2003. I open them about everyday in the summer. They do not leak. When they start leaking I will fix the drain hoses as I have seen everyone else do on the forum. Its not rocket science... If you want to go the simple route and skip the wiring. You could use a 4mm to open and close them manually. While you are at it you could paint your headliner.
