Interesting finding with one of my injectors
Hi guys,
I'm in the middle of a injector seal, valve cover replacement, and a intake manifold gasket replacement after I found a vacuum leak. As the tear down began everything has been going great. The RAVE is one hell of a resource.
I am having some interesting findings with soot on some injectors but not on others. Also one of the injectors was missing that "shield" type thing next to the seal on the spray end. Could these be a problem and if so what are my options?
Mike

How many miles on your truck? You will have carbon built up on the ends of the injectors just like everywhere else inside the intake. It's the buildup inside the injectors that is the concern. That's hard to determine without testing them which requires special equipment. You should just clean them up and put them back in. If you get the vacuum leak fixed and it runs great you're all set.
Regarding the shield type thing, I believe you are referring to the o-ring retainer. That's pretty important. Do you think it may have dropped off when you pulled the injector? You should try and find that in the intake. If you can't then I think you need a new injector anyway.

I found it in pieces on top of the manifold. I went ahead and noted which one in case of a misfire. Buttoned everything back up and took it for a spin. The issue I had with the brakes was immediately noticeable, as well as a smooth idle and no light!!!
Loks like a vacuum leak was the cause for my banks running lean.

Bumping this old thread because I have the same shield missing on one injector. It was not there on one injector. The machined bore on the intake is a really snug fit. I just don't see how the o ring could come off and go into the engine. Anyone disagree?
Agreed. My first couple head gasket jobs I broke a random retainer or two and gott all **** and pulled them off of other injectors.
Then I was at veteran techs house and he was slamming them in without the retainers. Told me that is SOP and no problems.
