I used to think that the current turn signal ring was a special bulb but in fact it is a standard bulb. It looks the way it does because the brake light (which is smaller) is put directly in front of the larger turn signal light. Thus all you can see is the light that is not blocked by the brake light which looks like a ring.

Pretty neat design and I love the look of it.
