Default intermittent heat

my 03 D2, the heat doesn't always work. It will blow ambient air, and then blow hot air for whatever reason, the heat starts working. the A/C works well.
anyone have any ideas on what's happening?

all the best

DII do not have a heater control valve, so the only way to shut the heat off is to turn the temp all the way down even when off

yes, I wasn't aware of that, but this is a new issue... the air from the vents isn't hot even after the engine is up to temp and should be pumping the hot air out, and then sometimes the heat will work and hot air will flow from the vents. The heat is only working part of the time
