Well everything has been great since May, when I replaces my rod bearings. Now it seems the same tick is back, but it is different. Before it was hard to locate, I couldn't hear it at the valve cover or exhaust, but from under the engine. Now I hear it at the valve cover, and in the exhaust. It definitely seems like a lifter. Now here is the interesting part...at least to me. It doesn't start until warm, but sometimes it goes away. You can hear above idle up to a around 1500 rpm, then I think the noise of the engine overtakes it. So is this a hydrolic issue? What oil should I use also, I am going to change it for the winter months in NC. Also does Lucas oil help?

I had the same exact problem after rebuilding my motor, the noise was just in the right head. I changed the rocker arm and it is gone baby gone. All credit to Spike555, thanks man..

 

how in depth is that? I learned to change rod bearings thanks to this forum, so hopefully I can do this too!

 

Wasn't that hard, I changed the whole assembly, the arms were on the shafts. They are right under the valve covers, just unbolt them and bolt on the new ones. I replaced it with new ones, because i had already had used ones on there. Also, The oil i used was 5W40 Mobile 1 turbo diesel oil and a mobile 1 filter.

There is only one way of bolting them back on, for example, if you did something wrong, they wont bolt on.

 

Don't just go buy 2 new rocker arms without checking out all that can make that sound, that being the lifter, its hardened surface, the cam lobe and it's hardened surface, the push rods for wear on either end and it's length that must all be exactly the same, the rocker shaft and arms for wear since the shaft is metal and the arms are aluminum and wear at different rates.
Once all of that has been checked then buy what is needed.
