No your right m8, but there is actually 2 versions of the 300 TDi, a mechanical and electronic controlled version.

And offcourse you forgot the TD5...........

Another problem with the 24v Cummins is that with all the reinforcement, upgrades, bits and pieces, you would be over your GVW by a few hundred pounds without passenger gear or fuel! It would be amazing though. Another good option is the Isuzu NPR 3.9 Litre turbo diesel. Great motor and much less expensive than a Cummins 4BT. Actually a feasible swap...

yup, I have a mechanical 300Tdi for my D90. I actually wouldn't want a TD5. At least 50% of going to diesel for me is getting rid of all the electronic/electric crap. The only thing I need to sort out is converting the fuel shutoff solenoid to mechanical operation like in the Antichrist's 2.25 diesel.

How about a GM 6.5 Turbo Diesel they will bolt anywhere a smallblock v8 will and only weigh a little more than a bigblock.

They only have a little over 200hp but they have over 400lb ft of tq. I have a new style fullsize 94 Blazer 4x4 2door and have goten 27mpg @ 70 with it and it weighs around 6000lbs. On average I drive it around town mostly I dont get below 18 in town. So imagine how good it would be in a lighter Rover.

If I keep my rover I am going to put a 6.5 in it when the Rover engine gives up on life.

I'v seen that engine swapped into a few M-715 Jeep military trucks. The block is vaguely based on the tried and true GMC 350. My uncle had a N.A. version of that engine in an Oldsmobile car during the second gas crisis. I've considered the 6.5 Turbo version as a swap into my pick up truck as well as the Cummings 4bt. I like this particular engine because of the massive amount of aftermarket support to swap a GMC 350 into Various trucks of all shapes and sizes from Advance Adaptors.
Just a heads up the Discovery II weighs 6064lbs there is nothing light about this truck as it has already saved me from getting much more smashed up in a 3 truck pile up.

The 5.7L was based on the olds 350 gas engine. The 6.2/6.5L motors came from Detroit Diesel. Good luck with that.

Actually the 350 diesel was not a redone gas engine it was designed to be a Diesel only for good fuel milage the 350 diesel got a bad rep because they were put into pickups and people pulled with them hard and their cooling system could not keep up.

The 6.2/6.5 is a completly different engine nothing can be swapped between the 6.2/5 or 350 diesel or any gas engine. The 6.2/6.5 is a Detroit Diesel that is true and it is still used by the U.S. military and is still being made by AM-General nothing to do with Genral Motors anymore. 6.5s also get a bad reputation just because they do not make 300+ horsepower and many of them were overheated which was not really the engines fault as much as it was GMs and the person driving GM used the same guages in the dash as a gasser so it showed that the engine was not hot untill 260degrees when a 6.5s limit is a little less than 215degrees so people would run them at 220-250 for long amounts of time thinking nothing of it tilll they blow headgaskets....But you would never be pulling 30000lbs uphill with a Disco anyway so you would probly never have a problem.

When I got my Land Rover I pullled it with my 6.5 Blazer the Rover sat on the tall trailer the top of the Disco was around 3 feet higher than the top of the Blazer and I was running 65-70 against 40mph winds for almost 150 miles my truck never got over 210 and it got almost 16mpg doing it. That is nice. And you guys are happy to get 16mpg unloaded on a normal day.

Word.
