2 cylinders have misfired. I believe it's #8 and #1.

I asked my mechanic to "fix" it so that there are no more problems.

What do you guys think the problem is? The mechanic said it could be the wires, sprark plugs or distributor.

has anyone else encountered this problem?

What engine codes did it throw exactly?

If it's as simple as plugs and wires, the good stuff (Magnecor and Bosch Platinum +4s) will run about $175-$200 in material.

Labor's another issue as if you have a newer D2 (03-04) you essentially have to remove the upper intake manifold to get to the coil packs in order to change the plug wires.

I did it myself, but if you're mechanic isn't too knowledgeable about Land Rovers you could be looking at several hours of labor.

Do a search for 60,000 mile tune up for a better idea of what's involved.

 

I have a 2003 Discovery with 23,000 miles.

It's a pita on any D2, not just the 03-04 MY's. If you have SAI (Secondary Air Injection) it's about 2.5 hours for changing the wires. That's if a pro is doing the job. Try to tackle it yourself for the first time can easily take 1/2 a day. There is a way to do it w/out removing the intake plenum, but you'll need to have small hands and a lot of patience.

Little scarry on the part of your mechanic, your truck does not have a distributor, it has a coil pack.
Call m\him back and verify the exact fault code numbers and get back to us.
How mechanical are you? How long has it been running rough, what octane gas are you using?

 

We don't yet know what your codes are, but mine misfired at approximately 35,000 miles. That was my first experience with the stealership. After their quote of $815 to replace the plugs and wires I got my first taste of DIY on the D2. It definitely required lots of patience and time, and I bent parts of me into kinky new positions to get into those spaces. However,I did it for a fraction of that money. Turned out I had one fouled plug wire. Once problem was solved the light went off and she drove like new.
