Key problem!
Just got my 04 Disco home, checking the two keys I got. The one key starts the veh. but now won't turn back to the o position to come out. I've made sure to be in park, turned the wheel but nothing is working. I have the cover off but not sure what to do next. thanks for your help!!
A non-factory key, correct? The neck of the key got jammed up on the steering column plastic cover?
It may not be a problem with the key.
What you describe was the key symptom (pun intended) of the first time the XYZ switch failed in our DII back in August '05. We were headed from Charlotte to Boston and The Cape for a family vacation. We stopped somewhere in Maryland on the Chesapeake for supper our first night and I couldn't turn the key to remove it. Thankfully I had a second key with me and I used it to lock and unlock the truck using it in the door handle, despite the horn honking every time I locked it because the BCU (computer) "saw" that the other key was still in the ignition. The key stayed in the ignition switch for the remainder of the week-long trip. That was fun.
Because the XYZ switch was failing the BCU didn't recognize that the trans was in Park and therefore wouldn't release the ignition switch to turn to allow the key to be turned to the 0 position.
That may be what happened to you. One thing to check in order to test the XYZ is to look at the gear position display in the instrument cluster as you move the shifter through the PRND321 range. Check to see whether or not PRND321 displays correctly and whether or not the corresponding red lights on the shifter surround also display correctly. If not the problem is almost certainly the XYZ switch. New XYZs are now crazy-expensive ($600+) but the can be rebuilt or you can by good used ones from dismantlers active on this forum like abran or Paul Grant.
Please test your XYZ by running it through the PRND321 range and let us know what you find.
