Default Key stuck in ignition switch in '00 Disco

Can't get it out. It won't rotate back to the final stop. Lacks about 1/8" of turning back to the spot where the key will come out. Truck has 189K miles.

Don't want to pay the $500 from the dealer for the switch.

Anybody have any ideas??

Are you sure the truck is actually in park?
Try pushing the gear shift towards park and removing the key.
If that does not work then unhook the battery, wait a min and then see if the key comes out.
If yes then the transmission is not 100% in park or the XYZ switch is bad.
If no then it is a ignition lock problem.

Mine acts up sometimes, assure that he little red light lit up near "P", if not then I pull back to neutral and push firmly back into Park. I should probably fix it but 98% of the time it's ok.

My other (somewhat relevant) problem is that the one of my key blade's pops out of the fob from time to time and is a pain to line up and pop back into place while it's stuck in the ignition. I have epoxy'd it in the past but it worked loose over time.

Make sure it's in park, if the little red light says I'm in park and the key won't turn to the off position then you should look into the cable or the xyz switch on the side of the transmission. These are usually the two culprits that cause your problem. Good luck and keep us posted.

Try wiggling the the steering wheel left & right while gently turning the key counter-clockwise and pulling on the key... my wife ripped the remote off the key trying to pull the thing out the first time I let her drive mine.

i had the same problem, altough i can confirm or deny the shift in park trick, because i havent been able to have it happen to me since.

i did do a small coat of pb blaster on the key though and run it in and out of the cylinder a few times once i did get it out, and i havent had a problem since. it feels alot smoother, but like i said, it could just been me not being used to the shifter and being to lazy/or hard with it going into park.

wiggle the shifter around, move it in and out of park see if that works.

if not, if its like other cars, it might be locked because the steering wheel moved to a point that triggered it, try turning the wheel hard left or right a good bit holding it, and switch back and fourth while trying to remove the key.
