Key Tips / Tricks?
Went today and had two keys cut at a locksmith (read on here to avoid Walmart due to the type of key). Neither of the keys work.
One was a blank, Land Rover replacement key we got when purchasing. The kind with the remote built into the top portion of the key - minus the electronics inside of course. The second was the flip key I saw on the forum and purchased from eBay where we could take out our electronics and put them into the flip key.
Am I missing anything or did they botch the cut on both? I could even see if the key wasn't correct on the eBay fob but I can't believe the Land Rover wouldn't work unless it wasn't cut correctly.

Were they copying your current key, or did they make the key from a number?
I had a locksmith copy the key on my D2 to another identical key, and I had no issues. I could see how if they key is from the vin you could run into issues if your locks have been changed for some reason.

Sounds like they need to look at it. I've seen some locks smiths touch up a copy if a key with a file to make it work. Or they need to give you your money back.
I will try to see if they can touch it up somehow. They said they couldn't guarantee the work because they didn't provide the keys. But I'm not as concerned about the $3 ea to cut but the actual keys themselves. I don't know how much the LR blanks are though, the eBay was like $10. All adds up though I guess.
a lot of problems with mis-cut keys it the machine operator doesn't flip the original key over to make the 2nd cut, they simply trace the one side. Know I know they keys are supposed to be the same on both sides but after year of wear they tend to wear in. If I look real hard at my original ley I can see one side is slightly off, if I put the key in one way no problem, there other I have to shake it, and that is on my original SLS key fob.
There are two issues when cutting these blanks. I was there when mine was cut, and I noticed both things while they were doing it.
1. The shoulder on the flip keys, and maybe others, are not at the correct length from the end of the key. It may need to be cut higher.
2. The width of the key after being cut is not correct. Some keys are wider before being cut than the original. The person cutting needs to correct for that when they cut it.
