Key's
So I bought a 2001 DII at a decent price finally but I have only one key. I noticed that the key detached from the fob which is common but my question is if there is a way to get another key without going to the dealer. I want one more key with a programmed fob but I would also like a key without a fob just for emergencies.
A locksmith, or a good hardware store can cut you a key with no fob. There is nothing special about the key, any kit that fits and turns the locks should work.
The fobs require a special computer to program your rover's BCU to accept them. Most programmers (even the dealer's) require a special barcode, which is hard to come by, so I would check with whatever shop is going to program it for you, before buying a used fob. If in doubt, get a NEW key and fob and then anyone with a Land Rover style computer should be able to program it.

You can get a key at the hardware store, IVCO4 is the model you need.
If you want another remote you must buy it from the dealer and have them program it.
You can buy them off of e-bay but if they do not have the bar coded they are useless.
But you will still need the dealer to program it for you.
Some dealers program it for free if you buy the remote from them.
The DI and DII use the same key blank so you can also buy a key from the dealer, just ask the parts guy for a key blank for a 1998 Discovery.

If the key blade easily comes out of your fob, and it is your only key, I would suggest securing it with something like super glue. I say this because I have only one key, and 2 winters ago, after locking up at work one night, realised my key blade had fallen out of the fob, into the snow, somewhere between the back door and the gate. I had to wait 2 days for the snow to melt, hoping the blade wouldn't be carried with the snow melt into a drain.
Luckily, I found the blade once the snow had melted. As soon as I drove the vehicle home, I superglued the blade to the fob.

You have three options:
1. Buy a key without a fob and have it cut. If you can live without a fob.
2. Buy a key/fob from the dealer, then they program it. VERY EXPENSIVE!
3. Or, you can buy a key/fob off eBay. Normally you need the "long barcode" number to program it which does not come with the eBay keys! But if you find a shop with an "Autologic" diagnostic computer, it can use the fob code that is in the key/fob itself to program it.
I went the eBay route, because my local independent shop had an autologic machine. It worked fine and took all of 2 minutes. At $50 for the key, and 20 to program it, it was much less than the dealer!

actually there is a way to get the pin code from the remote, open it up and take out the backing part and you will see a small five digit code on the back of the circuit board. but from there you need a special program written by lR to tell you the entire code and then use a machine to repgrm it. We would do it for a .5 since it takes five minutes to program.
