Knock/tick/clack @900rpm after top end rebuild
Hi All,
A little back story:
Last August I took my 04 D2 in for a head gasket.
While we were in there we did the lifters, timing chain and sprockets and sent the heads out for new seals etc... everything was great but it was thirstier than I remembered her to be...
Fast forward to 9 weeks ago and I'm still not getting the fuel economy I used to and I'm burning through oil, developed a loud tick of intermittent intervals and have a flashing check engine light....
Take it to the Rover Dealer that did the work, they heard the tick and went in and pulled the heads and found 2 of the seals were hard and leaking oil into the same cylinders that were throwing codes. They also swapped out the lifters under warranty, buttoned me up and sent me on my way.
That was tonight.
On my way home I stop for gas and heard the tick, only this time it is not intermittent but all the time at idle. As soon as I touch the throttle and bring RPM to 1000 it's dead silent...
Of course I will be taking the truck back tomorrow but I have to ask you all.
What would tick/clack @900rpm but go away at a steady @1000rpm?
Lifters are new, timing chain only has 15,000kms on it....
Where's the hands in the air emoji...?

Maybe check oil pressure and actual coolant temperature first?
Since you just got it back it would be nice to see if fuel economy and oil consumption has changed.
Your ELM327 (just $5!) can tell your smartphone if you are running in open or closed loop which greatly affects fuel economy.
*A tick that goes away with higher RPMs (if it isn't just more engine noise becoming too loud to hear a tick that is still there) is something one associates with low oil pressure finally raising enough to actually get enough oil flow to protect your bearings.
Since you just got it back it would be nice to see if fuel economy and oil consumption has changed.

*A tick that goes away with higher RPMs (if it isn't just more engine noise becoming too loud to hear a tick that is still there) is something one associates with low oil pressure finally raising enough to actually get enough oil flow to protect your bearings.
I would suspect a cam bearing; these and camshafts are often neglected during a top end rebuild because they are a PITA to change with the engine in situ. The camshaft can be done with some effort but the cam bearings are near impossible to change, especially the rearmost one.
Update:
- oil pressure came back .07bar @500 rpm and 3.4 bar@2000rpm - exact specification as LR states.
- the tick is intermittent still and while some have pointed out another thread for placing a .010 shim under He rocket shaft, I cannot think how that would help. Wouldn’t that raise the rocker shaft away from the head increasing the distance frand m the top of the pushrods causing potent Al for more valve trailer n sound?
im at a loss and everyone here at the Land Rover shop - even the guys who dealt with these Hints when they were new are stumped.....
again to date....
- new head gasket with rebuilt heads
- new lifters (again under “warranty”)
- new timing chain and gears
- oil pump is performing in spec.....
Guess ill just just run it till it goes then turn to turner for a replacement....
oh, my truck also has only 154,000 kilometres or 95,000 miles - always been babied, rosella 15-40 all the bs..... and it’s still crap.

This was my tick. One of the holes was clogged and the oil wasnt getting through to lube the valve/rocker.
I poked it out, brakekleen, and air...been good since and I just checked them since I'm redoing it again.
