'99 - mid '01 or an '04 would be my preference with records and low miles.

Here is one for sale from JAC on this forum: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...g-towel-39269/

you may have to talk him down to your price range though...good luck in finding what you want...you will enjoy

Good luck finding a nice 03 or 04 with a 5K budget anywhere around GA/AL. You do have the benefit of having a few good independent shops over there, but I don't know how you could pick up anything newer, properly documented. Actually, I dont think it even matters anymore how well these are serviced, just prone to the same faults either way.

I chose to stay away from SLS, but it is a neat "wow" feature. And it would be even cooler with one of these:

Default Thanks for the input

I have been looking for a little over a week, it has become an obsession. I have not seen as many '04's for sale, but seems like I can get an '03 with around 100K for less than $7K. I plan on purchasing as soon as I find the "right one". Thanks for the input and look forward to future discussions. I will post pics when I find her.

I typically (with the exception of the FJ40), drive a vehicle for around 2-3 years and then sell and try something else; however, I have always wanted to purchase a LR, as I feel that it truly defines who I am...as gay as that sounds, and would like to switch from LC's to LR's.

I have searched the forum and the internet for a couple weeks now. I get it...poor gas mileage, extensive preventative maintenance, possibility of high repair costs if not a DIYer (which I am), etc.

Knowing what you know now, what model and year would you re-purchase. I like the headlights on the '03 and newer, but have no issue with a '99 either. This will be a second vehicle, but probably a daily driver to work (20 miles one way). But if it is down for repair, I have a back up. I currently have $7000 in my "recreation" fund (was saving for a boat, but now have a friend with one - which is the by far the best way own one) and would like help picking one out. I have no exterior color preference, but refuse to own another black interior vehicle after the 540i, I have better things to do than vacuum the inside of a car every other day. With the maintenance cost involved, I would like to buy around $5000, and use the $2000 to take care of the preventative maintenance mentioned on the Noobie Sticky. I prefer to buy from individuals, rather than dealerships. I have been looking on autotrader and craiglist (Atl). I would like to buy this week if there is a LR out there worth purchasing. I am not asking for you all to speed much time looking...maybe just a quick scroll through autotrader with me. Btw, I enjoy posting threads and DIY's, so I look forward to leaving Bimmerfest and getting to know you all.
Best,
Riley
THIS is how it is supposed to be done, researched, planning on bringing it "up to par" and doing most of the work themself.

I would get another '97 in a heartbeat, nothing newer for me than a '98, I am not a fan of gizmo's in my cars.

I have had great luck with my 99. No major problems yet. Wife and I take turns driving it. Prob about 150+- miles or so a week. The gas mileage stinks, but the driving experience makes up for it. If your a DIY and have some decent hand tools, these trucks are not difficult to maintain. Open, big, and simple.

Here is a craigslist listing for a nice truck. I went and looked at it and it is clean and really nice. No records but shows signs of good maintenance. And no sunroofs.

I agree with tom on some points. Simple is better. therefore pre-95 is the way to go unless you get your hands on a defender especially if you plan on heading off road. the D1's are less complicated than the D2's. i can't imagine what an LR3 or LR4 looks like probally need an IT degree to solve a problem.

Personally if i had a second chance i would have held off on buying my D2 one more day and bought the RHD 88" series3 diesel i was looking at and had already negotiated down to $3500.
