Default Land Rover Damage

This is what could happen when a tire decides to remove its tread on the freeway at 65 mph.

Did lose control, spun around and ended up facing the wrong way on the 57 freeway. The CHP behind me said it was a miracle that we didn't roll.

I will find out tomorrow what the actual estimated damage is. The first guy that looked at it estimated around $4,000 for replacement of the rear quater panel and other damage. He wouldn't touch it because it is aluminum and not sheet metal.

Anyone have this repair done before? guess on the real estimate.

If it was a D1 they would total it. A lot of people will be wary of the aluminum. RAVE says hours rated for left side panel replacement is 13.4 hours. See shop manual under "Panel Repairs".

I've seen worse, ever see cement truck tire blow out?
Let insurance total it, buy it back, pound it out, drive it.
Use the insurance check to buy goodies for the truck.

honestly having worked in a hot rod shop and doing body work every day, that is very saveable. now if you don't posses the skills I'm not sure what the labor would be, but a REAL body shop, could straighten that up for you.. if it were my truck I would rather that be fixed than an entire quarter be replaced.

keep in mind I'm only looking that the pic, it could be worse.

oh and on a side note if you think that is bad, I hit a very small piece of tire in the road, and it snapped up and sheared the end of my crank shaft off in my E-250. it was flat on the ground just a piece of tread.

no idea how it happened must have bound up the crank pulley or something, but it sheared the bolt that holds the crank pully on and took the exposed end of the crank off. it died on the highway. I called my buddy at ford and told him that it acted like it jumped time...well it kinda did.... the CPS wasn't reading right anymore

The material it's made from shouldn't have anything to do with it. The quarters are bolted on. Let them total it, buy it back, call a recycler for a used quarter, and spend a weekend swapping it out.

That is called a "alligator", it is the re-tread off of a semi truck tire.
It happens when the tire overheats from being overloaded or under inflated.
They can total a car if they hit it just right.

You can buy a rear quarter for a few hundred bucks and do the work yourself in one day not really bad job just have to re-seal it so you don't have alot of road noise coming threw.
