Default LAND ROVER AND JAG PURCHASED

Birmingham Post

The Birmingham Post is reporting that there will be a rather major purchase announced as early as tomorrow and it involves a couple of the world's most recognizable car brands. Word is Tata Motors of India is buying Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford for a total of about $2 billion USD.

Ford has been shopping around for a buyer for some time now, so it's nice to hear about some sort of conclusion to all this drama. Tata Motors, all jokes aside about the name of the firm, is a company that is definitely on the rise in the worldwide market and by buying a couple of fairly well-respected brands, Tata could further establish itself as a worldwide leader.

Neither Ford nor Tata has confirmed any of these reports and the announcement may not even come tomorrow as Ford "has repeatedly said that a buyer will not be named until early next year."
I don't know how many of you have already heard this but I thought I would post it for those of you who haven't! Hopefully this will be a new start for LR and Jag, maybe Tata will bring something of the glory each brand once had back to life. We will have to see... What is everyone's take on Tata's Purchase of Land Rover and Jag?

yeah, this has been out for a while. With India being a former British Colony, hopefully they will stick to Rovers roots..

Wow really? I just heard about it yesterday when I stoped by LR to pick up a part. The way they were talking I sounded like it just went through.

My hope is that Tata will restore LR's reputation as a great off road vehicle and give us something to buy that is top of the line for off roading. Unlike the recent LR2.....

NPR said yesterday it was only Jaguar. Maybe they considered Jag and LR to be one and the same...Sure would be nice to see some change though.Maybe a retro version like what Toyota did with the FJ or what Jeep nearly did with the Gladiator Pick up. The American manufaturers are stalled in nothingness.

I dunno, I thought L/R had a great reputation as an off-road capable vehicle. I've looked over the new LR3 thoroughly and I was really impressed with it's beefiness and stout. To me, the build quality looked great also. Reviews that I've read have been good. I think Ford did a great job redesigning the models. Previous models were utilizing some pretty old technology and construction materials compared to their competition. Now, they just need to work on thereliability.I think the larger issue is that there are so many more SUV-type vehicles out there, some that arealso very rugged and reliable and they came at a time when L/R took their eye off the ball for a time. They also suffered from a poor dealer network in the past, something I think thatForddid a lot to improve. I was suprised$2b was all the companies were worth. I read somewhere that it was actually a high price though.

As for the Toyota FJ retro-rig, I've seen quite a few on the road. They look pretty cooltoo and I was pretty excited about them. One day I went to the Toyota dealership and looked one over pretty carefully. Talk about a plasticy piece of crap! I own a decent early 80's Toyota 4x4 PU (the ones that are supposedly legendary in toughness) and I can tell you I didn't see anything tough about the new FJ other than it bore some physical resemblence to the FJ40. In fact, things they tried to make appear retro (like a solid front bumper) was just plastic painted up to look like metal. In terms of robustness, to me, I thought the running gear was somewhere between a Rav4 and an Explorer. A good city-slicker sidewalk rig. Is it just me, or has anyone else come away with this impression? If Tata does do a retro rig, all they need to do is tweak and promote the Defender. It's already a retro-rig! A cool one at that!

I totally agree with you on the LR3. Its top of the line and really is a great vehicle for off road. My biggest thing is the restore the old off road market that LR used to have rather than having a huge market of soccer moms and gangsters. Hopefully (somehow) Tata will make some cool changes/upgrades that we like. But for now we are going to have to wait it out and see...
