Question Leaking Heater Inlet Pipe? Crankshaft Position sensor

2000 Discovery II with 132k miles. I had my headgaskets done a few months back. Generally, everything has been running fine. Had my side window broken out and my briefcase stolen on Friday morning so I ran down to the salvage yards near the border for a replacement window. It was about a 60 mile roundtrip. Found a window, had it installed and was on my way. (by the way, the guy had several DII engines in recently wrecked trucks, $1000, there was one very nice looking one in a 2001 that had been hit in the front but had no inpact with the engine, oil looked like brand new and no apparent coolant leaks, the place is La Paz in Otay Mesa, ask for Eddie). Got back, ran to Costco, got back to the truck to come home and the truck wouldn't start. After a few minutes, it started up, running fine, then threw a Check Engine Soon light, the M and S tranny light, the D on the dash was flashing and the lights on the center console gear indicator were flashing. About two miles later, she quit. After 5 anxious minutes, it started up and I made it home. Pulled out the Innova 3130 and quickily diagnosed a P0335 code, Crankshaft Position Sensor. Too late to order one up last night so that is on the agenda for tomorrow. Got under the truck to check out the removal route and noticed some fluid leaking, tracked it down to coolant coming from the back of the passenger side of the head. Snooped around some more and it looks like it is coming from the area where the heater inlet pipe connects to the intake. There was a small pool of coolant in a depression right behind the alternator. It looks like the heater inlet pipe is held in place by a tab bolted to the intake. The pipe itself looks like it has some liquid gasket around the pipe and intake connection. There doesn't seem to be anything else in the area that would be leaking in that area. The throttle body hose that runs from the overflow tank to the throttle body runs past, but it is not leaking and the intake to throttle body hose connects to the intake about two inches to the driver's side of the heater inlet pipe/intake union but it seems dry. Has anyone ever dealt with a leak in the area of the heater inlet pipe and the intake?

As for the crankshaft position sensor, any recommended brand to use? Kragen apparently has a bosch branded as a BMD, $75 or so. About the same price as Atlantic British or British Pacific, but I can have it in hand tomorrow. Anyone know if the dealer part is worth the extra $, dealer is closed so I can't find out the asking price until in the morning. Autozone has a Duralast for around $70 +/-.

Thanks

Phil

I ended up picking up the Crankshaft Position Sensor at the local dealer, charged me $75, same as Kragen or Autozone. I tackled the job tonight after work. It took about 45 minutes start to finish. I passed on jacking up the truck, saved my five minutes digging the jack out of the garage but did slow me down shimming back and forth from under the truck. The location of the CPS makes it a real pain in the tail to get to. Slow and steady. 7 mm bolts on the cover and 8mm nuts on the CPS, remember, it is a tight one-handed job. I ended up using a 1/4 inch rachet and an assortment of extensions along with 7mm and 8mm wrenches. Like has been mentioned, the plug is difficult to unplug with one hand. I ended up using a long screwdriver to push the plug out of the holder. Getting the plug unplugged was much easier than getting it plugged back together again. The access is so tight I couldn't even get the CPS cover out after getting it off. I just pushed it over to the side. Be prepared, it isn't a hard job, it just takes time. Got it all buttoned up and climbed out from under the truck. Started right up and runs like a champ. Thanks to all of those that have have plowed the field before. We drink from wells we did not dig. It is amazing how predictable these trucks are. Over time, everything mentioned in this forum ends up happening. I am just happy that the three amigos haven't come to town yet. All the best. Phil

On the 4.6L, so I'm assume the same with yours if it's a Bosch engine, there is an o-ring on the heater pipel you're talking about. There should not be gasket material. It sounds like someone has previously tried to stop a leak there.

Congrats on the CPS sensor. That is definitely a tight area.

thank Bryan, I pulled out the pipe and cleaned up the gasket material, removed a broken o-ring and replaced the o-ring. Put it all back together, bled out the system and it is running like a champ. This is really the first time that I have been able to get the air completly out of the system. I filled up the heater core with the heater core hoses disconnected. It made a great difference. thanks again. Phil

FYI, I bought the autozone duralast part for mine, and it was a bosch sensor in a duralast baggy. Looked exactly like the one I took out.
