Let's play 'What's that Noise?'
2004 LR Discovery 2 NAS w/SAI
Just finished head gasket job. (totally lost compression in cylinder 5) It went well. Internals were clean (not 'steam clean' though). Existing head gaskets were in great shape. Valves looked good except I, uh, found a bolt that was jamming the intake valve on cylinder 5. I fixed that. :-D Didn't even know I was missing a bolt. Oops. I got REAL lucky on that one.
Anyway, I got her all put back together and now I'm getting this weird noise from the passenger side. Sounds to me like a very small exhaust leak. I'm wondering if the new exhaust manifold gaskets just need to seat. I didn't use any sort of gasket sealant on them. Was I supposed to?
Yeah I know my idle is a little wonky. I'm still troubleshooting a random misfire. I'm going to check out the vacuum hoses next. Already done plugs, wires, coils.

It's so hard to figure this kind of thing out without looking at the truck in person.
Could it be a leaky SAI fitting? Or maybe the vacuum valve is stuck on that side?
That's what I would check first. If it's leaking exhaust, you can usually feel it if you reach down by the suspected area. If you can't feel it, a stethoscope with just a hollow tube can be used to pinpoint it.
