You can also spray water on the plugs and then start the truck and look for arching.

Checked the plugs, but didn't see any burn marks.

Also, went to the dealer cause I got a bit worried about the noise. Checked everything. Said my noise is a rattling cat. You know, I had hit them with hammers to see if they were rattling and barely heard anything, but he was pretty confident that was it. When I explained the noise from the camshaft area, he listened to that too, but said I was just hearing things from the cats.

Yea, I've been trying to reach another mechanic in town who apparently does a lot of work on rovers to get a second opinion (there really aren't that many where I'm at). As soon as I get in touch with him, I'll let him listen to it and see what he says.

You cna check the cats yourself.
With the engine off take the handle of a hammer and bang on the cats, do they rattle?

You know what's funny? That's the first thing I did when I started hearing the noise. I checked for exhaust leaks, then hit the cats with a rubber mallet and listened for them to rattle. Any rattle I heard was so quiet I didn't think it could possibly be that. I guess I was wrong. Just got back from a second opinion, and sure enough....it's the cats. We both got up under it while it was on the lift and it is more than obvious that the pipes are rattling. I guess between my hitting them with a mallet, the guy at the dealership hitting them, and the most recent pounding they took while getting a second opinion, the big hunk that had loostened up has now broke into some smaller pieces that is really easy to hear.

I think I'm just going to get the whole exhaust system redone while I'm at it. They look pretty rough.

As for the wires, I'm taking some measurements of the bad ones and the guy I bought them from are sending replacements in the mail.

Look for mice under the truck. If you see them, your cats are gone....
