i am trying to help browndog not debate the pros and cons of the traction control hill decent system.
if the locking transferbox is better than tc then why are all no locking transferboxes on any
range rover? any year and the 03-08 range rover has an open transferbox? and no viscous coupler?

Respectfully, I disagree. You said:

"i think traction control system 99-04 is better the locking transfer box the abs system grabs the wheel that slips so the power goes to theother wheels when you press the gas."

I would take that as expressing an opinion quite open to debate, to which a number of others including me responded with different points of view.

That's a question for Land Rover as I cannot speculate why they chose not to include a center diff lock. It could have been due to a different target market persona profile, long term availability of suitable components, insufficient field experience among the product managers and engineers, or any one of dozens of other reasons.

What I can say is what works bestin the field on the Discovery, and it is most definitely the locking center differential, over the non-locking differential.Dozens ofpeople here have been searching for locking center diffs for their Discoverys in the past few months alone, mostly after having been left behind by a diff lock-equipped truck.

Cheers,
Dave

The locking dif on Rangies probably went away with the introduction of the whiz-bang-ding factor of the traction control dial. That thing actually works great as you switch the dial from "rocky" terrain to "snowy" surface. However, I seriously doubt anyone would dare take their $90 Rangie where I take my '02 Disco with 2" lift and 31" tires.

Locking diffs really do work best. If I had deeper pockets, I'd have ARB lockers fore and aft. Still might do that.

you will have to drop the y-pipe, that means downpipe gaskets and nuts and may a stud or two.
also suggest new drive shaft nuts. good time to inspect the driver shafts too.
hope the picture on LT230 types helps
