Lightbulb Locks and Keys

My D2 did not come with a key to lock the doors when I bought it earlier this year, only a key to work the ignition which I believe is aftermarket. I finally found a locksmith company that would come out to see if they could cut a key.

The locksmith worked on it for nearly 2 hours and finally recommended replacing the door barrel as he believed there was some issue with the lock, although he did say my ignition key is the correct blank and as the same style 'cuts' that the door lock key should have, it fits into the lock but doesn't turn.. For his company to do it they would charge 495. The 120$ service fee I paid already can go towards that 495.

However the locksmith said I seemed capable enough and that I could probably replace the door barrel myself. Does anyone know if there are aftermarket barrels available that come with a key pre-cut or have any other advice? I don't need a keyfob, but I'd really like to be able to lock up the Disco when I run into a store or leave it at a trailhead.

I just did a Google search and found several places selling lock barrels for not too much money. You could also get a good used one from roverguy.com
Also some videos on doing the job.

You may want to consider getting a matching ignition barrel and door barrel from a breaker. Or maybe the entire assembly for each (some breakers only sell the assembly).

Did you talk to your locksmith about re-keying the existing lock barrel to match the ignition?

are you sure it's not just a broke wafer in the lock? that would keep key from turning and depending on which wafer broke it may appear that the key goes all the way in. It's simple enough to pull the handle and inspect the locking mechanism. Not a whole lot there that would require a full replacement if I remember correctly.

I'll give it a good look tomorrow. I don't know much about locks so I'll look for some diagrams to understand how it works.

If it is a broken wafer then is it still a replacement? One of the LR breakers got back to me with 100$ for a doorhandle, lock, and matching key assembly

Well if you value your time at all that deal is going to be hard to beat.
