Had my Rover for about 3 years now. Just recently started putting real miles on it. Has 104,000 miles. Motor has been rebuilt, new oil pump, water pump, radiator, fan clutch, in line thermostat mod, coolant is brand new, front drive shaft has less than 4,000 miles on it. Have been thinking about taking it on an 11 hour drive back home. Anything else I should look at or should i just play it safe and fly?

 

Other than gas prices, No... You will be fine... Enjoy it!

 

A long road trip in the D2 is just ... fun... and makes me miss the gold old days. Have done several past year in the D2. I have other newer cars I could drive instead but I love a D2 trip w/ a dog in the back.

That said I've done all the preventative maintenance and replaced anything in the usual failure mode suspects category for a D2 (CPS, XYZ, battery, driveshafts & rubber coupling on rear driveshaft, air suspension bits, maintenance up to speed, etc)

3 reasons not to take it:
... the D2 is f-ed and isn't going to make it
... as long as you don't have an imbalanced tire or vibration at speed ! That drives me crazy on a road trip in the D2.
... when it's maybe over 90 degrees, not because of failure, but b/c I can't take my eyes off the Ultragauge. I pay attention to nothing else.

 

Just change the fluids and watch the Ultragauge (or temp gauge du jour that is not the OEM one). I did a fly and drive for my last one that was 1200 miles after buying it on line. They are fun road trip machines. If you are scared, some of the spares listed above and a decent set of tools as well as diagnostics.

 

11 hours is nothing - what is the distance you are travelling? I did about 1200 miles in mine, 5 months after buying it no problems no concerns. They are old stuff could break, the same is true of new trucks just drive sensibly you will be fine

 

I love a road trip in the D2, just did 1200 miles to Glacier National Park and back in mine (ticked over 190k during the trip). As long as the routine maintenance is done go for it! I changed out the diff fluid, t-case fluid, spark plugs, and oil in preparation for my trip. I also upped tire inflation to 40 psi. Some of that was regular maintenance but I figured if I can gain 1-2 mpg over the course of the trip it will pay for itself with these gas prices (it worked).

 

I do multiple road trips every year ranging between 1,000 to 4,000 miles. If that wasn't possible, I wouldn't own this car. The only thing I have to take care of is the oil level, adding one quart every 700 miles.

Would i be fine in just doing the full 11 hours in one go. Or would you recommend stopping halfway and letting it rest for a night? I would normally just take my old 2000 camry and just do it all in one go but those things are pretty much bullet proof lol it got stolen unfortunately

 

@Mullins.cody You will be stopping at least twice for gas each way . But seriously you should be fine, after fueling wait 10 minutes check your oil,coolant level, serpentine belt for any weirdness and do a quick walk around to make sure all is well ,take a look at your tires incase you have any getting low and continue on. Maybe 15 minutes at a gas stop.
