Looking at Buying a 99-00', What to Look for???
I'm currently looking at buying a 99-00' Disco, but have heard some ups and downs, and thought who else better to talk to other than the people who own them, so I need your help. The mileage range im looking at is in between 75k and 100k. I was wondering what should I look for in terms of problem areas and what I can expect. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I will be using it as a daily driver, driving no more than 30 miles a day, if that. Two trips down state, which are about 350 miles round trip. Also occasional off-roading. Thanks in advance.
I'd recommend that you read my tech info pages at http://www.eurotekapg.com/techinfo.html ---to get a primer on problem areas. I don't think it is a good idea to buy any used Land Rover that does not have complete service records. We see too many new owners with the "deer in the headlights" look when we tell them about the real costs involved in taking care of existing problems the PO blew off.
On the vehicle you describe it is important that the 60K major service was done. Look for any evidence of coolant leak under the entry point of the air intake plenum (fairly common for this throttle body heater plate to leak ---and it can lead to engine overheating as the level in the system drops). Look for any evidence of coolant leak on the underside of the water pump snout. Get it in the air and look for signs of weeping head gaskets (looking behind the exhaust manifolds). Feel the carpet on the passenger footwell side for evidence of wetness (indicates a leaking heater core).
If there are any warning lights on (ABS/TC) then the fix could be expensive.
On the positive side, these are great vehicles IF they were maintained properly by an attentive PO.
