they're not the same thing but to be honest, I think the difference in models is really unnoticeable.

Ok lets say this, If you had to buy a DI what model would it be, and what how many miles and other things would you look at and for? Then if you had to get a DII what would you look at and for, and how many miles?

Thanks again for all this help, im really finding some good Disco's!

For a DI, SE, any miles, just make sure everything works.

DII, SE, any miles and look for one without the air ride suspension or the 18" rims. Again make sure that everything works.
Avoid the 2003 model year.

I have a 1997 SE and would not trade it for a DII, or anything else, well, ok, a G-Wagon.

Why does a lot of people like the DI's or the DII's?

I like the DI better because it is much simpler. Less things to go wrong. Trail repairs are easier. Better departure angle too.

DII is more complex, therefor more that can go wrong, more things to fix, and a lot of common repairs are harder than on the DIs. On the plus side, the DII has more interior space, and has nice things like electronic traction control.

Those with DII's love them.
Those with DI's love them.
I have a DI, and just like hazlet said, they are simple, and I like simple.
As for the best years...1997-1999.

The interior of the DII is bigger and has better erginomics.
The HVAC controls are digital as well as the odometer. Better stereo and remote fuel door release. Also has auto climate control.

The DI has a mechanical odometer and rotory ***** for the HVAC.

Both have four wheel disc brakes, 4 wheel ABS and dual airbags.

The DI shares chassis with the Defender, the DII shares its chassis with the Range Rover of the late '90's early '00's.
