Default Looking at a Discovery

New to the forum but not new to RR. I currently have a 2011 RR HSE and have put 70K miles on. No major issues outside of standard maintenance and recently brakes.

I am looking to add a 2003 Discovery SE 7 and wanted to know from the experienced Discovery owners here if there is anything I need to consider before pulling the trigger.

It is a 2003 Discovery SE 7 with 100K miles. The air suspension was replaced with springs and shocks. The owner states it is in good condition mechanically. Everything works as it is supposed to. The asking price is $4,500.

I know nothing about Discovery's so any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Price is good. Good stickies at the top of the forum. My suggestions:

1. Pre-emptively replace/rebuild front driveshaft
2. Run 15w40 diesel motor oil exclusively.
3. Replace dexcool with normal green coolant - recommend replacing thermostat at that time with 180 degree thermostat.
4. Either replace all plastic cooling system components or keep a very close eye on the coolant level - at 13 years old they are very prone to springing leaks due to plastic failure and will drop your coolant level while driving.
5. Recommend removing valve cover breather tube (it will come out by twisting with a pair of pliers), cutting top off of the removed tube (03/04's were restricted for tighter emissions - results in more rapid plugging of the baffle) and replacing the baffle with a new one (guaranteed to be plugged up and removable only with a drill).

They will run forever if you keep the oil I recommended and coolant in them - my daughters has 201k on it and runs like a top (mine is an 03 with 138k on it).

Why? You can get another Range Rover for less. Seriously, if you count the parts and labor (your time) that Discovery II will cost, you could buy another L322.

That's a huge assumption you are making. I would literally have to replace everything on the Discovery to make what you are suggesting even remotely plausible.

I'm not looking at a total rebuild anyway.

you post does not say where you are located so I will throw in RUST, RUST and more rust,
check the complete frame for any sign of damage

Yeah that's a given with any vehicle. I was referring more along the lines of what Extinct mentions in his above post (which is excellent). Anything unique and specific to that year Discovery. Like I constantly read about the headliners that come apart. Not sure if that is across all Discovery's but just an example of specifics one should look for with Discoverys. I love the overall lines of the Discovery and plan to make it a rock trail rig. I'm going to put in a lift with heavy duty shocks and probably 35's. Redo the brakes as well so items such as these are not a concern to me.

Extinct gave some excellent recommendations as well as what I will want to do to the rig.

Rust post is appropriate - the one you are looking at is priced appropriately assuming no rust - I live in the south so we don't think about it but all the trucks we see from up north have the frames rusted. I would recommend only buying a southern truck (no cost difference) and rustproofing the frame if you are going to drive it in the salt region.

Default Pvc

Are you referring to the PVC, breather?
Any pictures of the modified tube?

thanks
