Default Looking for a Discovery, whats the goods and bads?

Hi, I am new here but I have always loved the looks of the mid 90's Discoverys. I have never known anyone personally who has owned one and I have a few questions. I have noticed that you can buy 93-95 Discoverys for less than $5k-$6k these days. All of these vehicles have over 100k miles on them that I have seen. I have always been into Jeep Cherokees and the last Cherokee I owned had 192k miles on its 4.0 litre inline six cylinder when my son total lossed it in an accident. Are these Discoverys that long lifed and dependable? What are the pros and cons of buying one of these higher milage units?
Any other info you can give me on these Discoverys will be appreciated.
Thanks

If you are seriously looking for a D1, I know of a 97 with 40,000 miles on it, nice modifiactions and only off the road once, for $9000. If you are interested let me know, I'll point you in the right direction.

Normaly 120k miles and most isuses have been delt with but thats not guarented of course .recent stampedservice history is vital .if not do not take any ones word .so change all oils that are ness.Cam belt, look for power sterring leaks (red oil) lift matt in boot ,make sure no rust at all up to back seats ,sun roof leaks ,front axle 2 brackets that hold anti roll bar etc are they sound if not thats a new axle.try the air con and best of luck.

I would check all forums out before buying any Land Rover, Land Rover engine will not last as long as your Cherokee, Just look at Discovery engine failure on this forum. At this moment I amrepairing a 2003 Discovery SE7 engine with only 51500 miles on it, 1500 miles past warranty. Land Roverwould not do a thing but charge forchecking it out. They use a 1961Buickall alumium V8 engine designwitha few changes. Land Rover has head gasket problems on this engine.Land Rover parts are high and somewhat hard to find. Rovers look good but thats about it. Just do your research first and you will not be sorry.
Rovers require deep pockets. I love my 2 Cherokee Sports

Well there is one in every group, and I have read about his engine problems on other forums, he did get screwed by Rover,
but that does not Rover engines in general defective or short lived.
Having been a service manager for both Jeep and Rover, I would tell you they have have their own little quirks. Overall, if you maintain a Rover correctly you can get 250,000 out of it as you can out of a Jeep.
My biggest draw back on the Jeep is the unibody construction which can be torn up off the road under hard wheel conditions, luckily there are Rovers around to get them back to the road afterwards.
As for his complaint about head gaskets, lets look at Toyota, 6 model years running, the highest head gasket. engine failure rate in the business, doesn't make them bad, just took them a little while to get it right also.
Hope you find the Disco you are looking for.

The question is? Good and bad. No manufacture is perfect.
Also dealers make a brand good or bad by their service record and factory support. A person should always do their research before buyingand the good and bad will show up. Toyota findley had to pay back as much as 10 years back. Just maybe this will happen to Rover. Land Rover has a ongoing class action on the LR3. . Rovers do have a high maintenance cost to maintain them and parts arenot ready available like the Jeep. Jeep is what he had before. I just stated my problems with Rover. This is the only forum,I have posted on about Land Rover.
