Make sure you give a good look underneath for frame and floor rust.

Don't worry about the dealer being 375 miles away, you won't want or need them. They tend to think of LR owners as walking wallets with unlimited Platinum Visa cards.

If you don't have a nearby independent LR shop, the interweb, your own tools, and the RAVE manual will get you through most any issues.

The obvious things to check are if ALL of the dash warning lights come on when you turn the key to the first position. Sometimes warning lights have been disabled or taped over on a troubled vehicle. Then I'd plug a code reader in to the OBDII port... listen to the engine at idle and at 2000 rpm, cold and warm. Listen for ticks, taps, other loud noises... take a stick or mechanics stethoscope and listen (carefully) to the heads/block. Find out what kind of coolant and oil are in it... and if the levels are appropriate in the overflow reservoir and on the dip stick... Drive it a whole lot... if it passes the above and you really love it, then go for it.

You will definitely get this. That high, open view is my little daughters favorite part of my D1.

I would slow down, your rushing in. These cars can be a money pit so due diligence needs to be exercised. There are really a zillion on the market so dont worry about letting this one go. Spend some more time researching, you shouldnt be asking these kind of questions 2 hrs before going to look. Find an independent shop to do an inspection, as others have stated it will probably need front drive shaft and headgaskets if they have not already been done.

Congratulations on the purchase. I hope you and your family really enjoy it. I just purchased an '01 last week. Please check the gasket at the base of the throttle body. There is a heater plate there and mine was leaking coolant. Seems that is a known issue with these trucks. I replaced the heater plate and both hoses that run from it and solved my coolant leak problem. Also check the "T" connection on the hoses that fit into the top of the fan shroud. I was told by the parts guy at the dealer here that those crack and you will lose all your coolant. Good luck to you.

There is a really good sticky at the top of the page titled "Major Service" that will be very helpful to you.
