Loose steering
I have a friend that got a new-to-him Disco last year. It was a little loose, so he replaced all of the steering ball joints. Got the drag link complete as his was bent from a trail. He had it aligned and flushed the steering system, even centralized the box. It was still a little loose, but not much more than normal. It has been slowly getting worse over the past year. He kept telling me that he had checked everything for tightness.
I got under it today and everything was tight..... Except the pitman arm. Someone had worked on it, probably replacing the steering box, and did not mash the lock washer properly. I got 3 full turns on the nut before it got tight. Steering problem solved and the washer got installed correctly.
Just wanted to post this so people can search it. You can think you have checked everything, but there might always be something taken for granted. Who would think a pitman arm would be loose? It was. Saved my buddy $400 on a new box, and probably his life waiting on the new one to come in.
Having had replaced my steering box a few months ago, I checked mine just to make sure. It is still good..
