Default Loss of power--and regain of power

1999 Disco 2, 4.6 Liter, and suddenly it loses power. Won't go fast enough to get out of first gear. After it's parked, it looks like there's some fluid under the car. Brought to a garage and left for two weeks or so.

This happened to my wife. I wasn't there. But when I called two weeks later to figure out the issue, the technician said he could find nothing wrong. Got up to operating temperature, went along fine at 55 mph, no fluid leak, no apparent problem.

What could cause this? The car is over 700 miles away, through the Canadian wilderness. If I get it and start back, how likely is it to lose power again, in the middle of nowhere?

Any ideas greatly appreciated--thanks.

Something like a throttle position sensor could be at fault, but you should have codes. What color fluid?
