Yes = At home
No = Take to a shop

. you can buy a repair clamp. basically a u-bolt w/ bracket that squishes and seals the new slip over piece

If you're on a tight budget, chopping the resonator out and throwing on a glasspack in place of the muffler will be the cheapest loud option, second to straight pipes that is. You don't absolutely need to find a shop, especially if you're not positive you want to stick with just straight pipes. Just buy some 2.5" pipe and some exhaust clamps from the parts store and you can just use a hack saw to do any cutting you need to.

Muffler's Inside construction dictates the kind of noise reduction it will do, high-pitch or low- pitch, also the proximity to exhaust manifold , when closer it's eliminates high-pitch when further eliminates low-pitch . Rover V8 will naturally make higher pitch compared to standard American V8 from late 70's early 80's because of slightly higher cam duration and overlap if both were running without any cat/ muffler. So disconnect 3 bolts from back muffler that goes to rear pipe/muffler and see if U like what U hear by gaining all eliminated low-pitch noise by muffler in back, if u did , you can bolt it back and replace back muffler with a 3" or 4" pipe , lowest cost as mentioned earlier, if didn't like it and it wasn't what U R after, and U want that deep "boom boom" sound the only way is to replace front muffler with a nice scilencer that eliminates most of high-pitch noise and not put any end muffler to give it deep low-pitch sound. (there is lots of sonic science in designing good mufflers). Unfortunately no cheap fix.

Fit a couple of these

one each side straight through exhausts or possibly with a tube muffler.

well I ran the numbers by my mom and she laughed and told me no glass packs because when she was in highschool her brother put glasspacks on the family's suburban and everyone in the neighborhood hated it and he got a ticket once too. think I'm gonna go with the straight pipes if I can convince my dad

Ah, that sucks. Everyone in your neighborhood is going to hate straight pipes more. They gave me a head ache from the drone. P
Some people don't understand that there are different sizes in glasspacks that have different sounds. The bigger the quieter (but also the deeper the sound), and that thrush is relatively big. What if you did the glasspacks but left the resonator in place? That should still be louder than stock and have a pretty good sound, the resonator is just essentially a glasspacks with steel wool instead of fiberglass.
