Low Mileage 2003 Disco - Certified???
I'm looking at a 2003 Disco with 28k on the clock. It's LR Certified with 2year 25k limited warranty on it. 2 Years ago I bought a Freelander when I thought I wanted a Discovery and it turns out I was right. I feel like I have a winner but after reading bearcatfan's post about his recent 2003 problems I'm a little concerned.
I have 2 questions:
1) LR has their 140 point inspection fora truck to be certified - Does it bring all the maintenance current in this case the 24k service?
2) I've been trying to find a write up on the "limited warranty" but can't. LR's site only refers to it but doesn't spell it out. My question is does anyone know if I am covered for all the usual faults that come with owning a Disco like : 3 Amigos - U Joints - etc.
Thanks

1.) All scheduled maintenance on an 03' is paid for by Land Rover. I have an 03'
2.) Havent had any problems with getting stuff covered under LR extended warranty... so far valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, locks, heated seat, window not heating up...
Good luck!
What are they asking?

A vehicle that only has 24,000 miles on it doesn't need much, but if you read the service requirements, it should have at least had the 30,000 service because service is based on mileage and or time.
If it is not done, don't make it a deal breaker, just be aware that all the fluids in the truck should be changed.
As for the wording of the warranty, have the sales or service manager give you a copy of Rovers warranty which they must supply you.

Too much money even though it has low mileage. SD is more of a base truck, I would suggest you either really hammer down the price, say into the mid $15,000 or go on Craigs List, there are plenty of Discos out there are on the market. I have recently seem some 2004, which offer more features, that have been selling from $18,000 to to $20,000.
thanks for the advice. I was going to walk away at anything above $16k, there's an 04 (not certified SE) with 35k that a used car dealeris asking $18k for. I'd rather have the 04 but it's not at a Rover dealer so I have less confience in buying the Disco from them.
About bringing your maintenance current; It's milage or time period, whichever comes first. An '03 is 4yrs + now so you really want to be thinking about the 60k/48mo service, which means changing all the fluids. I just had this done to my recently purchased '03 and it only has 35k.
I don't know anything about LR "certified" or what exactly that means. I would guess that it means it has been thouroughly inspected and they are certifying that it is problem-free.
"Limited" warranty probably means a component type warranty which is limited to only the components listed on the warranty contract, as opposed to an "Exclusionary" warranty which provides the best coverage and lists only the items that are NOT covered (usualy routine maintenance consumables like oil, filters, spark plugs ect.) I would not trust website hype, a brochure or any verbal statements regarding the warranty...insist on seeing a copy of the actual warranty contract and read it VERY thouroughly. At a LR dealershipask to speak with theFinance Manager, they are THE people who handle the warranties and would be the 'horses mouth' so to speak.
FYI: I recently purchased the LR Assured Extended Exclusionary Warranty 36k/36mo for $2,800...and was very happy to pay for it, as based on all the info I learned on here about Land Rovers, I was pretty sure that it would more than pay for itself (plus I plan to sell with warranty left over which will greatly help my resale) - Well guess what? I have a leaking oil pan gasket, leaking t-case gasket, leaking rear wheel hub gasket, broken window regulator and a broken rear wiper arm = well over $3000 in dealership repairs. Warranty paid for and then some!!!
And I've only owned the truck for about 60days, got the warranty 40days ago.
So if you buy that '03 I highly recommend you upgrade that Limited Warranty to the LR Assured Exclusionary warranty. Technically you do not qualify for one since the original factory warranty expired after 4yrs but a good Finance Manager will do it for you, especially if you buy the truck from them and make it a condition of sale.
From my research, aftermarket warranties are dodgy at best, but the LR Assured is solid.
