Lr disco 2 how i fixed the overheating issue
I also believe most fixes are with the hg issue. There is no way a dealer is going to charge u 500 bux to do a hg swap. It will be in the 2k range. I wouldn't even touch my truck if they did it for 500bux. If u do it yourself it won't even cost 500. Unless lr is raping people on gasket sets. U seem to know alot about this stuff. So enlighten me. What's a carbon cutter? I want one. It's in open loop a touch longer with this mod and could most likely be lessended if u could find a sweet spot in nodding the t stat so it's opened up just enough to allow air thru. I simply made sure it wasn't going to overheat by doing the 4 sides. It gets up to operating temp. Just takes a bit longer and won't damage anything but gas mileage till it does. And if u bought this truck for gas mileage ur a douche anyway. Cheers guys.
Easy there flyin2jz...Douche anyway? Well If you own a LR, you are the douche..... idiot or pretty much like everyone else on this forum... a dumb ***... Remember, a 2004 DII was a $37,000.00 POS 5 years ago.. Parts and labor have only increased since then so it's a fight you will never win. To begin with your truck new was a POS... It had the same flaws as Nasa's Challenger...a delicate balance of "ZERO" Tolerances as far as the engine goes and was built out of tolerances. I own 2 DII's as i cant afford a defender with a diesel...I have done about every fix from drilling the thermostats to block sealers and oh course, head gaskets... i can tell you that the only way to get it fixed correctly is by doing the head gaskets and cooling system. If you only do the head gaskets and dont replace the rest of the cooling system parts...ie hoses, belt, waterpump, thermo etc, you would be a real douche.... $500.00 does not cover that...
Hey , i wish i could take a flame thrower to the idiots responsable...but it's not a perfect world...The engine is just a POS.....
Just remember, if a $37,000,00 truck can be had 5 years later for $6,000.00 you would have to be a douche to buy it... Hello.... Whats wrong with this picture ....
Like i said, i own 3 so i am KING DOUCHE...
OK guys I have a few cooling system questions, first off my truck is a 97 and I live in Phoenix, we have been in the triple digits for about a week now and my truck has been getting hot, now what I mean by hot is peaking at the higher end of the gauge. It is not going above the normal range just close to it, and it only happens with the A/C on (and usually when I am stuck in traffic or not moving). I am aware of 1 of the 2 electric condenser fans not working and the coolant makes the waterfall sound under the dash. During the rest of the year I have absolutely no high temp issues (it always sits about 1/3 of the way up the gauge) even on extended trips. My temp gauge always drops back to normal as soon as I turn off the A/C, so I am wondering if the bad condenser fan is most likely my problem or if it may be more severe? I also had to just replace one of the hoses (I actually did them both) going to the heater core last week and I am not sure if I bled the system wrong, I did have the waterfall sound prior to that. What is the proper bleed procedure?
the water sound means that there is air in the system...hense the waterfall sound. Hot in traffic..well could be a number of things....did you check the waterpump too make sure its circulating and what about the radiator? Heat at idle usally point's to flow.. i live in florida and it's been 96 every day now so i know the heat.. It shouldnt overheat at idle. flow rate usally point to restriction at the radiator or a pump not circulating. It also can mean that your headgasket or block has a weak point and is showing it's ugly head when hotter than normal. Do you have pressure in the hoses? check and get back.... they where actually designed to sit in the desert and idel for hours but it didnt work out that way..

yes in fact when the hose went last week it sprayed like a guyser! I opened the hood and had to close it because it was spraying like a super soaker, after a minute or two it lost alot of pressure. Dont forget this only happens with the A/C on I can drive it all day without the A/C and not worry about a thing.
Well guys I'm a douche also because I love the truck and when I bought it I knew of the issues they had going in. I didn't pay alot for my truck. It's a 2000 and has 135,000 now on the clock. Perfect shape with no dings or dents and the engine runs great. I paid 3500 for it so I had something 4wd to use for deer hunting. This thing will go thru anything and I love it. I will buy another one if it bites it. My wife was tired of me stuffing deer in her Mercedes suv. Lol

I think the problem is alot of people don't wanna admit they own a 5k lr discovery 2. They may have purchased new for 40k plus and just can't come to the realization they aren't worth much. I can because I know what I paid for it. I was looking for a new rover disco when we purchased my wifes ml430 it was a no brainer after we drove the Benz. The Mercedes was so quiet inside u could barely hear a horn blow right beside u. Plus it's as solid as a tank. The Mercedes prices on getting stuff fixed is 50 times higher than the lr. I needed plug wires for it. 976.00 I about crapped. So the lr fixes aren't nearly as bad as I'm used to.

I wish they had some german engineering whenthey wher looking to power these piles...Yep...$960.00 for wires...well the disco is not that far off considering the dealer will remover the upper intake...my wifes 2005 volvo s 40...open the hood..you cant even find the wires....i think they are under...
just put a roof rack on the mercedes and throw that buck right on top...

you are either having blockage or restriction... could also be headgasket related. have you checked the plugs or done a block test? Do you get white smoke when you startup in the morning? is your exhaust wet at temputure? See if it's boiling in th expansion tank. Also check that you cap and bottom return on the tank is good and not cracked. Has happened on my range rover before. You may also want to consider a compression test... By your posts i would not drive it..
Let us know, Chris
Cold operating temps cause the ECu to go into an open loop state, thus overfueling and causing carbon build up. If you have old O2's, this can happen too. You get a sooty pipe. It will also clog the cats and hurt your valves. 96 and up have carbon cutters on the valves, but that doesn't mean they can't be damaged.
You speak of your race car and also a $2K fix at the same time. If you are an engine guy, you know it can be fixed for under $500.
Again, I am not knocking you for what you have done, I am merely pointing out the possible negatives to what you have done for people who may read your thread and just try it. You just did it, it hasn't been proven. The proven fix is to replace the head gaskets.
The gaskets fail because of the factory gasket material. Updated gaskets will last.

Is this primarily a DII issue or are the DI gaskets the same material?
