Default Manual and Sport Mode warning lights blinking

Dear LR forum,

I have a 2003 Discovery II. The Manual and Sport Mode warning lamps started blinking whenever I start the vehicle and stays on until I turn the ignition off. Then I restart the car and the problem goes away. There will be times when I need to turn off and turn on the engine 3 times until the issue goes away.

See pics below for reference:

I checked the owner's manual and it states if the Manual and Sport mode lights flash together, this indicates an electrical fault with the automatic gearbox. And if it keeps happening to seek qualified assistance urgently.

Has anyone experienced this issue? What's the root cause and is it an expensive repair?

Thanks

Al

Remove baterry terminal. Hook up again and tighten it. Usually, its a loose connection. Thats in limp mode

I removed the battery cover to check the battery terminals. Look what I found on the negative terminal:

What causes this white powder to form around the terminal?

Thanks! I hope this resolves the issue.

Just simple inorganic chemistry. Remove the terminal, clean it the terminal and the post well and reattach the cable. Auto parts stores and Walmart sell chemical-infused felt "washers" to go on the terminals that inhibit the problem. Hopefully that's your only problem. If the M+S lights come back it's still likely a voltage problem. That's not always the case but based on years and years on this and other Rover forums voltage problems are the cause more often than not.
