Thanks guys,

I'm looking at a diagram I found here and wondering if when I switch the cables for spark plug 5 and 6, I'll leave the other end on the coil pack and just route it to the cylinder on the opposite side?

Do you think it's possible to switch the cable on the coil pack without removing anything else? I figure this might help me determine if the coil pack itself is problematic. I understand these are difficult to get to and some people relocate the coil pack.

Just to be abundantly clear, no, that will not work.

The positions on the coil pack determine the firing order. That is the order in which each piston is reaching the top of its compression stroke and ready to have the fuel-air mixture ignited to begin the power stroke. If you swap the wires at the plug end only, it will run like crap.

Run like crap as a technical term.

The truck would have a misfire on two of its eight cylinders.

I think I understand - I can't just switch the cable at the spark plug; I have to disconnect cable 5 and 6 from the coil pack and the plug, the reconnect the other cable?

Correct, which is why I suggested just doing new wires, plugs, and coil packs. Never a bad idea to do and not super costly. If doing any work with wires and you're having an issue might as well do the packs or at least the pack that the problem cylinder is fired from.

Thank you - in the 2003 Discovery 2, I think there are two coil packs rather than 8 individual coils, as far as I can tell in my research.

From what I've seen, if I replace everything it'll cost something like $300-400?

Ignition coil pack - set of 2 - https://www.roverparts.com/engine/ignition/ERR6045K/

I saw there's this complete ignition coil pack too - https://www.roverparts.com/engine/ignition/ERR6566/ but hoping I don't need to spend on that and can just use the ignition coil packs themselves

Are the Bosch Platinum +4 pre-gapped properly for the D2? I don't know how I'd use a coin-type gap tool on a +4 type plug... Are the Eurospare ignition wires decent? The current wires in the vehicle are blue and I think they might be the Magnecor 8mm set https://www.roverparts.com/engine/kits/9207B/

There's also this set - Magnecor wire and Champion plugs - https://www.roverparts.com/engine/ig.../NLP100320SKA/

I don't think there's much spilt oil on the valve cover over cylinder 5 (there's a bit on the other side, but no misfire there) - do you think the plugs and wires can get contaminated by oil that's made it's way around the plug sockets?

do the set of 2, kingsbourne wires, and plugs of your choice. If you do it yourself you shouldn't come close to that 3-400 price range more like $150.

Cool, I'll look for some good prices then. I've been doing everything myself except tires and alignment for a bit now but I'm learning on the way here. $150 for coil packs, wire and plugs sounds good! Thank you
