That is assuming the UG calculates by know the milage driven over a preset refill capacity? Or do you enter your mileage at fill up and it just does the calc for you?
You do a calibration of the UG. I think over four or five tanks you manually input the amount of gas used and the mileage. Then it becomes even more accurate. And you should also calibrate the distance. Like on mine, every one mile on the odometer is actually 1.3 miles driven.

The real fuel tank capacity for Land Rover Discovery 2 with 2495 ccm (151,48 cubic inches) with other words 2.5 TD fuel tank capacity is: 93.0 litres (24,45 gallons)
