I've had three Disco, one Defender, and one Series IIA. The Defender is a *completely* different animal than the Disco, despite similar running gear. It's way more primative in every imaginable dimension, which can be good (simpler to deal with, a lot more "pure" driving experience, etc) or bad (zero bad-weather protection, almost no HVAC, not exactly comfortable, etc).

I bought my Defender off eBay from a guy in Oakland in 1999. Took it to the dealer immediately and said "fix everything". $5k later, it was all back to spec and I was still only into it $19k. Put on a Shipman "Moab" front bumper, OME's, Warn, etc. and I was off to explore the big wide world. I took it places that the local "Jeep guys" had not even really considered driving. It was my daily driver for nearly three years.

The biggest issue is the impossibly small fuel tank. There used to be a kit to add a Series truck style "aux" fuel tank under the passenger seat, which gave you another 11 gallons with a hokey "transfer pump" to let you use it to top up the main tank on the fly. Pretty close to a "must have" item, in addition to the jerry can carrier for the rear bumper, if you plan on any serious off-roading.

I *REALLY* miss my Defender.

Recently helped a friend buy one, he found a 86k mile '95 5-speed soft top for only $28k. Which is a real bargain, these days.

yeah the british have done nothing wrong besides base their culture around booze. just hopefully they took a break from this life basis while assembling my landy in the factory.

 

Do some research and find out the specifics on how to import vehicles. There is a guy in our LR club that drives a diesel Defender that he imported when he moved here from the UK. He said it's really not tough to get it in and get it registered once you find out all the details of how to do it. I'd love to bring a diesel 110 from the UK but I can't afford the truck, the shipping or the cost of importing it legally.
